The Santer Lab is recruiting 1-2 summer students for May-August 2026. We welcome applicants through the URA, NSERC USRA or co-op programs. Students work full-time (35 hrs + lunch breaks) at the 4th floor of the Apotex Centre at the Bannatyne campus.
We have been fortunate to train 8 co-op students so far in 4.5 years and every summer student is paired with a senior staff member or graduate student to aid in their own project.
We have multiple projects possible, so I give choices to see which is of most interest to an incoming summer student. All revolve around an immune protein family called type III interferons and we are mostly focused on studying the human immune system. A 2026 summer research project will likely also involve studying regulation of inflammation in ulcerative colitis with funding in place from CIHR and Crohn's and Colitis Canada. More examples of projects would be discussed in an interview. Techniques summer students typically learn include human cell culture, flow cytometry, RT-qPCR and immunofluorescence microscopy.
To apply, please email your CV, tailored cover letter for our specific lab and topics we study, and transcripts to deanna.santer@umanitoba.ca. Don't forget to highlight any other wet lab experience from classes or other jobs and what your potential career goals may be. Complete applications will be reviewed as received and interviews are expected to start by early December. If any other questions, please don't hesitate to email me at deanna.santer@umanitoba.ca
