Emerging evidence suggests that innate immune cell activation is closely linked to the metabolic state of the cell, that is, the metabolic pathways it uses to break down, produce, and store macronutrients like glucose and fatty acids. We are working to understand the mechanisms by which shifts in cell metabolism lead to changes in cell function, and how this can be manipulated to potentially control pathological inflammation.

We recently discovered that omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) induce a strong and consistent metabolic shift in monocytes. As part of our NSERC-funded fundamental research program, we are working to understand how this shift occurs and how important it is to the overall cellular effects of n-3 PUFA.

We are recruiting an MSc Student in Pharmaceutical Sciences to lead these investigations using cell culture models and primary cells (mouse and/or human). The student will gain expertise in technical skills such as:

· Cell culture

· Seahorse XF metabolic flux analysis

· Gene expression analysis (esp. qPCR)

· Western blotting

· siRNA knockdown

· Analysis/interpretation of targeted metabolomics data

· Immune cell isolation

Our lab also emphasizes transferable skills such as:
